Toyota drew three top safety awards from the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety.
The 2023 models of the Prius and Prius Prime won the Top Safety Pick+, and the 2023 Corolla Cross small sports-utility vehicle won the group’s Top Safety Pick.
For either award, vehicles must get good ratings in IIHS’ driver- and passenger-side small overlap front tests and original moderate overlap front test. They must also have standard acceptable or good headlights in all trims and offer a front crash-prevention system with advanced or superior ratings in a daytime vehicle-to-pedestrian test.
The “plus” award also requires a good rating in an updated side test, plus an advanced or superior rating in the nighttime vehicle-to-pedestrian test. The base award needs only an acceptable or good rating in the updated side test.
The Cross just missed the plus award because it earned an acceptable, rather than a good, rating in the updated side test.
